Griffin signed a one-year contract with the Ravens on Wednesday. Their backup last season, Ryan Mallett, is a free agent after signing a one-year deal in March 2017.

Joe Flacco is a long-established starter at quarterback for Baltimore but Griffin will be in the mix as their back-up and could get his chance if Flacco falters or picks up an injury. His last game was as a member of the Cleveland Browns, in the 2016 regular-season finale. He turned 28 in February. The QB completed 72.5 percent of his passes for 232 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, his best game of that season.

"I felt like (Griffin) really wanted to be here".

Washington famously traded a boatload of draft picks to the St. Louis Rams to move up in the 2012 draft and select Griffin, who made them look like geniuses in his rookie year.

But Griffin was the starting quarterback the last time the Browns recorded a win, on December 24, 2016.

Newsome said Griffin went to work out for a second team after throwing for the Ravens last week.

A Week 14 game against the Ravens, however, changed Griffin's trajectory. I really feel that way.

But Griffin, who had a history of injuries in college, reinjured his knee in the NFC wild-card-game loss to the Seattle Seahawks and underwent surgery on both his LCL and ACL. He will probably be here early next week to sign the deal, ' general manager Ozzie Newsome said.

The #Ravens almost signed RGIII a year ago and maintained interest throughout. "I felt like he really wanted to be a Raven". RGIII won Offensive Rookie of the Year over Andrew Luck, tossing for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 102.4 QB rating while adding 120 rushing attempts, 815 yards and seven running scores. "We're always working to make our roster as good as it can be". "I believe our players are going to love the fact that he's here; they like him as a person".
