But the real star of the festivities was Migaloo, a giant inflatable white whale that floated above spectators and performers alike as red confetti was showered on the stadium.

More than 4,500 athletes from 71 nations and territories will be vying for 275 gold medals at the multi-sport event.

Team Scotland was the first nation out into the arena for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia's Gold Coast.

The programme error follows a printing mistake revealed in February that had the wrong day listed for the opening ceremony on some 14,000 tickets sold for the event.

Adekunle Adesoji picked up the gold medal in the 100 metres EAD in the para-sports event at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, thereby setting a games record of 10.76.

Only South Africa's Durban had bid for the 2022 event but the coastal city was stripped of the privilege a year ago after after a series of missed deadlines and financial problems. The motto of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games is "Share the dream".
