Bumgarner underwent successful surgery Saturday to fix his fractured fifth metacarpal, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The Giants have not yet given an estimate for his return, but a source told ESPN's Buster Olney that he is expected to be out six to eight weeks.

On Friday, Bumgarner was making his last appearance before starting on Opening Day for the Giants, when he was struck with a hard liner during the third inning.

A dirt bike accident last April on an off-day forced him to miss about three months with a shoulder sprain, with many fans unsympathetic on social media.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy was relieved that the injury wasn't more serious. He went 4-9 with a 3.32 ERA in 17 starts and threw just 111 innings.

"This is terrible news for us".

"Because of what happened to me last year, how we did last year, the whole combination of things and the group of guys that we've got here this year and the new staff. the players that they brought in, I'm really excited", Bumgarner said prior to his injury.

The regular season hasn't even started and the San Francisco Giants are right baCK TO where they were past year at this time. "I feel like we've got a good chance to compete and win some games this year".

Bochy was visibly upset about the Samardzija injury saying he did not want to speak about it since it was such bad news.
