After losing her voice in the name of publicity for a much-talked about Super Bowl ad, the electronic personal assistant, Amazon's Alexa, has gone quiet today with widespread reports of malfunctions.

So for instance if someone from the USA attends a wedding in Japan without knowing a word of Japanese, Alexa would help the person hold a conversation in the local language.

Beyond language itself, the company wants Alexa to gain a well-rounded knowledge of the cultures in which the translated languages are spoken.

Amazon Alexa is already capable of translating short sentences in English into 36 different languages, including Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian and Thai. In 2017, Google boasted that the Pixel Buds ($159 ) were able to perform accurate real-time translation on the go, but the feature was not well received.

After a long hiatus when she returned to cinema in English Vinglish , she stunned everyone with her superb performance. But such was her dedication to her craft that she continued to dub for the film albeit with her leg in a plaster cast.

The virtual assistant has also been making predictions ahead of this year's ceremony, and also has Alexa Skills available - which can be used to discuss the awards or take part in trivia quizzes on the event.

Amazon's Alexa team, meanwhile, knows the challenges of providing the kind of real-time language translation that is often seen in science fiction movies. Despite the issues, you can still control your smart appliances by using the Alexa app. UPDATE:The nation's largest carrier, Verizon, is also having problems today.

Whenever Amazon rolls out the real-time language translation feature for Alexa, tens of millions of Alexa-powered devices will be ready to receive the technology.

Users reported issues with Alexa's voice recognition service on either Amazon Echo devices or third party electronics that run Alexa, reports The Verge.
