Winter Storm Watch issued for Southeast Michigan, heavy snow expected

Winter storm warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service where snowfall is expected to be heaviest in parts of southern Lower Michigan, northern in, northern IL, southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa.

"Highest snow totals will be for our southern sections under the winter storm watch with 5-6" expected.

"The reason for the Winter Storm Warning is because 5 to 10" with some spots getting upwards of a foot of snow during this time frame. Some airlines preemptively canceled or delayed flights on Tuesday in preparation the conditions Winter Storm Liam would bring.

The snowfall is expected to start on Wednesday and continue most of Thursday before gradually tapering off that evening. By Thursday morning, a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, snow, and even rain is expected to form along I-15. The snow will persist into Friday morning.

Environment Canada says motorists are advised to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve, and to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

Bright and breezy weather sets up for Thursday before more snow showers are possible Friday. Any minor fluctuation in the storm's track by a few miles to the north or south will shift the narrow icy zone and corridor of heaviest snow accordingly, said AccuWeather meteorologist Renee Duff.

For now, if you have travel plans on Friday you should have a backup plan ready as roads in all directions will be covered with snow again later this week.
