Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil sees shadow, six more weeks of winter

In Orlando, during the following six weeks after February 2, temperatures have increased by almost 2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1950. That's right, Groundhog Day is here-again-and Punxsutawney Phil is about to (maybe) ruin our Friday. In the years following the release of the movie, crowds numbering as high as 30,000 have visited Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney.

There was a longheld tradition in England that if the weather on "Candlemas Day' was "fair and bright, ' winter weather would remain". This year will be the 132nd ceremony.

Fans of winter are rooting for Punxsutawney Phil after he crawled out of his burrow at about 7:18 a.m. Friday and saw his shadow on Groundhog Day.

In the event that Phil didn't see his shadow, it would have been a late-winter. Birmingham Bill is the groundhog for Groundhog Day in Alabama, Staten Island Chuck is the official groundhog for the ritual in New York City while Shubenacadie Sam is the groundhog for the occasion in Canada, the report said.

If it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive soon. However, if there are clouds in the sky during the time when the groundhog comes out from the hole, then it means that spring season will come early.
