LOS ANGELES - Activision Blizzard and Twitch have completed a two-year deal to broadcast both season one and two of the Overwatch League on Twitch.tv, the two companies announced at the league's media day on Tuesday. The deal, announced earlier today, is believed to be the biggest exclusive distribution deal in esports history. In total that's a whopping 312 skins to start the season.
Overwatch has launched a patch that primarily focuses on adding in-game integration for the Overwatch League which is set to begin its first season tomorrow.
However, the update will also include a new "Overwatch League eSports tab", which gives fans access to all the latest action and info from the games Esports scene.
Blizzard added a new Overwatch League tab to the game, where all the league's information and skins are housed. Clicking on these buttons takes you to a submenu where you can purchase team skins for all of the game's 26 characters. The plan behind the new currency is to essentially perform an extra stream of income for the competitors - no details have been given regarding the currency but we know that Blizzard will be taking a portion. H&M apologises over 'racist' image of black boy in hoodie
Others said the apology from H&M wasn't enough, given that the hoodie referred to an insensitive slur used against black people. Last year, the Weeknd unveiled a collaboration with discount fashion superstore H&M.
Aside from China, the new agreement provides exclusive worldwide coverage of all of the first two seasons of Overwatch League. Unlike the other skins in the game, players can only obtain League Tokens by directly purchasing them from the Blizzard store.
"We wanted to drive significant viewership of the Overwatch League in its inaugural season and beyond", said Armin Zerza, COO of Blizzard Entertainment. "Given Overwatch's consistent reign as a top viewed game by our community, we look forward to offering their pioneering style of league play to a large and passionate fanbase that will be able to bond over not only their favorite plays, but hometown pride".
Blizzard has experimented with streaming their esports events on platforms other than Twitch, and it has nearly always been met with resistance. You'll be able to get your hands on the Overwatch League skins on January 10, the same day that stage 1 of the League begins.
