Designers also installed new headlights, a sportier front bumper, and a redesigned rear end with "clean and sharp trailing edges allowing air to flow more easily off the back of the vehicle". "Due to launch in 2020, this FCEV will spearhead Kia's efforts to realize a zero-emission future for mobility", said Vice Chairman Yang.

Kia reckons that today's drivers view cars as merely "vehicles"; a big box to transport humans and dogs and empty crisp wrappers and old boxes and so forth. But Kia says this Niro EV Concept showcases significant tech advances and a range of 238 miles - which would put it right up against the Chevrolet Bolt EV and better than a standard Tesla Model 3's range.

Kia's best-selling model in overseas markets was the Sportage compact SUV with 415,558 units sold. That panel is created to display information like the battery's charge level. The all-electric Niro will use the same lithium-ion battery pack and electric motor as the Ioniq Electric, which provides an on-paper range of 174 miles.

"By 2025, we will offer a total of 16 advanced powertrain vehicles, with five new hybrids and plug-in hybrids, five new battery EVs, and an all-new mass market FCEV".

Inside, there's a new wraparound design to the dashboard, finished in silver, grey, and bronze. Apparently one example of the touch controls is on a leather-wrapped section of the Niro EV steering wheel.

Kia has adopted what it calls a "boundless" vision of future mobility, wherein the auto is no longer just a means of transportation, and developed the "ACE" action plan, which involves producing more Autonomous, Connected and Electrified cars over the course of the next decade.

Interestingly, Kia says the concept "draws inspiration from" the existing Niro, though it looks pretty close indeed to us. Kia's system uses speakers in headrests along with active noise-cancelling to allow front-seat and back-seat passengers to listen to two different things simultaneously without disturbing the others, and without the use of headphones.

Before that, meanwhile, there'll be an expansion of Kia's WiBLE vehicle sharing service.

Right on the heels of introducing the plug-in hybrid Niro, Kia is previewing an all-electric version of the small wagon. Kia says it'll start that process in Europe, offering one-way trips rather than demanding the auto be returned to the same starting point.

Ford will show the vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit later this month. That makes sure the F-150 makes the most of its low-rpm torque, for instance.
