Gov. Inslee issues statement on death of Pierce Co. sheriff's deputy

The Sheriff's Department says one suspect was found dead at the scene, but another male suspect is still at large and is considered armed and unsafe. One suspect was found dead at the scene and another is on the loose and being sought by authorities.

McCartney was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma where he died.

"He was one of the people in our agency who stepped up and stepped forward", said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor, according to KOMO.

The officer was identified by the sheriff's department as Daniel McCartney of Yelm, a Navy veteran and a father of three young boys.

A police spokesman said the police authorities believed there was a gunbattle between McCartney and the home intruders during the fatal encounter. A large containment area around the shooting scene was blocked off for several hours while authorities searched for a second suspect. Police have determined that two suspects were involved in the incident.

Deputies are doing a K-9 track in the area and have closed Canyon Road at 176th Street South all the way to the end of the road. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie and is believed to be armed.

Due to the manhunt and ongoing police investigation, the Bethel School District has canceled school on Monday.

McCartney spent six years with the Hoquiam Police Department before transferring to Pierce County in 2014 and resided near Yelm.

He served with Pierce County for some three years.

There are road closures as a result, and the Bethel School District has now chose to close its schools today.
