An explosion killed four policemen in a closed market at north Kashmir's Sopore town on Saturday morning, triggering worries that militants were back to using the bomb after a three-year break.

The IED planted underneath a shop exploded with a big bang and killed the four men on the spot. The place was cordoned off and a search operation is underway, a police officer told news agency IANS. On December 31, three fidayeen (suicide) militants of Jaish had attacked the 185th battalion camp of the Central Reserve Police Force in Awantipora area of Pulwama killing five paramilitary troopers. "My deepest condolences to their families", Mufti said.

The slain cops were identified as ASI Irshad Ahmad, besides Constables Ghulam Nabi, Parvaiz Ahmad and Mohammad Amin.

Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Law and Justice Abdul Haq condoled the loss of lives in an IED blast in Sopore and snow avalanche in Kupwara district. JeM said its "Afzal Guru Squad" carried out the attack. The report quoted a source as saying that the IED was planted beneath a shop. They had asked people to give decent burial to the ultra. "There was an IED blast in which four of our boys were martyred", said Khan, who was recently promoted as additional director general of police, but continues to hold the post of inspector general of police (IGP) Kashmir. "May the four courageous J&K police personnel killed in the line of duty today rest in peace", Abdullah tweeted.

Several officers were injured and condition of one is said to be critical.
