Detroit Auto Show: Ford Edge ST Looks, Acts Sportier

The Edge is the first Ford SUV to get a performance-focused ST model, which will be part of a refreshed Edge lineup that will be on display at the Detroit auto show next week.

Ford has launched a new performance SUV that is the first to wear the ST badge and slots into Ford's performance line with the Focus ST and other cars. Under the hood is the same 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, but it's been dialed up from 315-hp and 350lb-ft of torque to 335-hp and 380 lb-ft of torque.

It's also outfitted for dynamic handling with a quick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission, standard all-wheel drive with selectable traction control, an available performance brake package, and ST-tuned sport suspension.

Ford didn't say if the new Edge ST would come with the same courtesies, but here's hoping we all get a chance to hustle a 2-ton SUV around a track. Inside, more aggressively bolstered front seats join an ST logo on the wheel, seatbacks, and sill plates.

Updates to the rest of the Edge lineup include restyled front and rear fascias, interior trim details, additions to driver assist features, and extensive upgrades to the vehicle's telematics and infotainment.

Standard on all Edge models is FordPass Connect, with a Wi-Fi hotspot that gives internet access to up to 10 devices. But that doesn't take into account the new Edge ST. More importantly efficiency has additional gains from the switch from a six-speed automatic to an eight-speed gearbox - which is now operated via a new rotary knob, instead of the classic gear lever. A 12-speaker B&O Play system from Harman will handle audio.

"It's not just a sporty color or badge", said Jonathan Crocker, the 2019 Edge ST engineering manager.

Today, January 11, Ford introduces the ST edition of the sports utility vehicle Ford Edge.

SYNC with AppLink™, an enhanced voice-recognition communications and entertainment system, is also standard.

These add to the existing forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, high-beam assist, hill-start assist and reversing camera.

The heart of the 2019 Ford Edge ST is the uniquely-tuned, 2.7L EcoBoost V6. Such a title was given to the SUV thanks to the inclusion of Post-Collision Braking, Evasive Steering Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go and Lane Centering.
