Brian Gionta named captain as U.S. unveils Olympic roster

Following the second period of Monday's NHL Winter Classic at Citi Field between the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres, U.S.A. Hockey announced the complete rosters for its men's, women's, and paralympic teams for the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Not only is he one of the most decorated hockey players on the entire roster, but he also has a history of being a captain at the NHL level.

The team's first group game is on February 14 against Slovenia before they face Slovakia on February 16. It includes college players Troy Terry from Denver, Jordan Greenway from Boston University, Borgen from St. Cloud State and Ryan Donato from Harvard.

It will be the first Olympics without National Hockey League players since 1994.

The Rochester, New York, native became an unrestricted free agent following the 2016-17 season and after not being offered a contract, signed with the practice squad of Rochester, the Sabres' American Hockey League affiliate.

Duggan is the second player to captain the U.S. Olympic women's hockey team twice, joining Cammi Granato, Tony Granato's sister. The initial US roster includes the admittedly "semi-retired" Gionta, three players from the AHL in Bourque, Bobby Butler and John McCarthy, four from college and 15 now playing in leagues across Europe. The three are among 10 players returning from the team that won the silver medal at the 2014 Olympics.

"We have a decent amount of players that are already used to playing in Europe on the big ice, which can be helpful", said defenseman Ryan Gunderson, who's now playing in Sweden.
