15 killed, dozens injured in South Korean hospital blaze

The death toll from South Korea's hospital fire has risen to 41 Officials said more than 80 people injured in the accident.

Miryang is about 270 kilometres southeast of the capital, Seoul. The fire started at around 7:30 AM (2230 GMT) in of the emergency rooms of Sejong Hospital in South Korea. He said all the victims, including some at an adjoining nursing home, are believed to have died from smoke inhalation, not burns.

"My father works at Sejong Hospital's funeral hall", said a Twitter user. The fire was put out in one hour and 40 minutes.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

South Korean President, Moon Jae-in, called an emergency meeting with senior aides to address measures to be taken in response to the fire.

Three of the dead were medical staff, officials said.

People in South Korea are still recovering from another fatal blaze in Jecheon last month where a commercial building went up in flames, killing 29 people.

The fire is one of several deadly blazes in recent years.

Sprinklers were not installed in the building due to its small size, the hospital's chairman, Son Kyung-chul, told reporters.

Interior Minister Kim Boo-kyum travelled to Miryang to apologise for the fire. While the patients in the nursing home were evacuated safely, more than 70 people inside the main hospital building were injured and transferred to nearby medical facilities.
