Lower Gas Prices For Holiday Travelers

On the national level, the average price this week for a gallon of gas dropped just over 12 cents from a month ago.

AAA Northeast says its weekly survey on Monday found the price of a gallon of regular unleaded fell three cents, to an average $2.46.

After falling for five straight weeks, prices are finally lower than they were in late August when Harvey stormed through the Gulf of Mexico to Texas, shutting down more than one dozen refineries along the coast.

States with the lowest average gas prices: Missouri ($2.14), MS ($2.16), Alabama ($2.16), SC ($2.17), Arkansas ($2.17), Oklahoma ($2.18), Tennessee ($2.19), Texas ($2.20), Louisiana ($2.21) and Kansas ($2.23).

In 2016, we were looking at prices 17 cents lower than what we are now seeing nationally, AAA reports.

"More than 97 million Americans will begin to hit the road this week for the holidays - the most ever on record", said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson.

"However, the strong supply of gasoline should help stave off any gas price hikes that would otherwise be caused by such a surge in demand". Gas prices had fallen almost 14 cents in the last month, but were more 9 cents higher than a year ago.

Though the gas price will be the highest in years, it's also down from where prices were at Thanksgiving. Pennsylvania (sixth), CT (ninth) and NY (10t ) are three of the top 10 most expensive states for gas.
