"The Netherlands worldwide will be assigned squad number four, upon his arrival at Liverpool".

Following Liverpool's long-running pursuit of the 26-year-old Netherlands center back, Southampton announced on Wednesday that it accepted the record fee ahead of the January transfer window opening.

CELTIC legend Chris Sutton took to Twitter to troll a Rangers fan after Virgil Van Dijk's world-record switch to Liverpool.

But Shearer, who began his professional career at Southampton before moving to Blackburn and later hometown club Newcastle United, believes Van Dijk is severely over-valued.

Media reports said Liverpool beat Manchester City and Chelsea who had both shown an interest in van Dijk.

Speculation had been rife regarding van Dijk's future after he was absent from the matchday squad for Southampton's past two games.

A statement from Liverpool read: "Liverpool Football Club can confirm they have reached an agreement with Southampton for the transfer of Virgil van Dijk".

The Police Department said it was alerted and units were requested to stand by at the gate. After the discovery was made, the plane returned to the Los Angeles International Airport.

"The Reds have agreed a deal with the south coast club, and the player himself, which will see the 26-year-old defender move to Anfield when the transfer window reopens on January 1", Liverpool said in a statement. "Southampton could have named any price they wanted and Liverpool were desperate", the former England worldwide told BBC Sport.

Van Dijk was keen to part ways on good terms, praising Southampton for letting him shine in the Premier League for the first time. Thank you for everything!

Liverpool had offered around £60 million for the defender in the close-season and former Manchester United star Gary Neville questioned whether he will prove worth the extra investment.

"What can I say is Liverpool need defenders".

The fanbase is likely to be split on the decision to sell the Dutch ace in the January window with the Premier League's trapdoor just at arm's length, but the massive transfer fee will sweeten the pill.

This time, it was presumed this was so because the deal with Liverpool was being ironed out.
