The supermoon is seen in the sky while a farmer walks with cows in Naypyitaw, Myanmar, Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017.

It was the first and the last supermoon and full moon of 2017, and it looked handsome over Kamloops last night. 22News videographer Don Sutherland captured this video Monday morning.

The moon gained the title supermoon because it was not only full, but also passing Earth at about its closest point in its orbit. "About twice each year, a full moon lines up perfectly with the earth and sun such that earth's shadow totally blocks the sun's light, which would normally reflect off the moon".

The pull of the full moon mean tides will be both higher and lower than normal this week, leading to some Auckland ferry services being cancelled because water levels will be too low.

The most recent supermoon was around a year ago on November 14th, 2016. Often cast in a reddish hue because of the way the atmosphere bends the light, totally eclipsed Moons are sometimes called 'blood Moons'.

The people of Ukraine will be able to observe in the night sky the lunar disk, which will appear larger and brighter than usual. Nichols says that despite the difference between a regular full moon and a supermoon, it is not as grand as it appears.

Astronomers say the best time to catch a glimpse of it is either right after sunset, or minutes before the next sunrise.

"If a 16.1 inch pizza is "super" to you, compared with a 16.0 inch pizza, then we have an issue of vocabulary.:" Tyson wrote in a follow-up Tweet.

Since the Moon's orbit is elliptical, one side (apogee) is about 50,000 km farther from the Earth than the other (perigee).

Considering the moon is always more than 225,744 miles away, it's not a major change.
