As a package, "Fix NICS" would keep guns from domestic abusers - while "Concealed Carry Reciprocity" would force states to allow people to carry concealed guns in public even if they are domestic abusers, have other unsafe histories, or lack even the most basic safety training to carry concealed guns in public. In 2013, Ms. Allen, a single mother of two, was arrested in New Jersey for unlawful possession of a weapon even though she was licensed to carry a concealed firearm in her home state of Pennsylvania.
This legislation has been a 30-year priority for the NRA, which still uses the hoary and bankrupt argument that if more people possess guns - whether openly carried or concealed - society will be the safer for it.
This is not hyperbolic.
"Concealed Carry Reciprocity" would gut our gun laws because it would force each state to accept the concealed carry standards of every other state - even states that have weaker standards, or worse, no standards at all. This legislation passed the House 231-198. Twelve states-including neighboring Arizona-allow concealed carry without requiring gun owners to obtain any special permit. "Anybody with a permit from another state with much less stringent requirements could come into CT, walk into the convention center, or Rensselaer Stadium with a concealed gun, using another state's permit, possibly with a domestic violence conviction or mental health issues", Sen. Please include your name, town and phone number, for confirmation purposes. "We are disappointed in the House for passing this reckless legislation and we urge the Senate to respect state laws, to protect the safety of our communities, and to reject this bill", Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said in a statement. "If one state says you are fit to carry a gun, other states should recognize that as well".
A minimum of eight Democrats would need to support the package in the Senate for it to become law.
There is a bill that is backed broadly in the House and has enough Senate Republican support to beat a filibuster.
Starbucks Partners with Alibaba in Opening AR Roastery
There are plans for a fancy Starbucks roastery to open in NY next year, but the company says it won't be quite as large. It will also host the Teavana Bar - its first outlet in China specifically offering a range of Chinese teas.
Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans said the bill "most assuredly puts the safety of all police officers and the public at risk.".
It would also allow people to carry concealed weapons into federally owned lands, including national parks.
"However, as The New York Times reports: "... the background check measure was not enough to win over most Democrats, nor did it persuade law enforcement officials in some of the largest cities, including New York, who say the legislation would force locales with strict gun laws to bow to places with few or no gun restrictions".
But Gabby Giffords, a former congresswoman critically wounded by a gunshot to the head in a 2011 assassination attempt, sounded an alarm immediately following the bill's passage.
