Canadian police have said they are investigating the deaths of Barry Sherman the founder of Apotex Inc. a Canadian pharmaceutical company, and Honey his wife.

Tributes have begun pouring in for Barry Sherman, founder of the pharmaceutical company Apotex, and his wife, Honey, after they were found in their Toronto home.

Apotex is the seventh largest generic drug maker in the world with more than 11,000 employees with annual sales of over C$2 billion across 45 countries.

"Sophie and I are saddened by news of the sudden passing of Barry and Honey Sherman", Trudeau said in a tweet. His fortune was estimated at US$3.7 billion.

Hopkinson said police, fire units and ambulance responded to a "medical complaint" just before noon on Friday.

They would not confirm that the two bodies were the Shermans but say they are treating the deaths as "suspicious".

The Shermans recently listed their home for sale for almost 7 million Canadian dollars, about $5.4 million.

Police have issued few details about the circumstances of the deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman. When the real estate agent in charge of the sale was preparing the home to hold an open house, she discovered the bodies of the couple in the home's basement, reported a local paper.

Honey Sherman was a member of the board of the Baycrest Foundation and the York University Foundation.

The Sherman family released a statement Saturday saying: "We urge the Toronto Police Service to conduct a thorough, intensive and objective criminal investigation, and urge the media to refrain from further reporting as to the cause of these tragic deaths until the investigation is completed". Neighbours confirmed that the property was the couple's home.

"Wonderful human beings, incredible philanthropists, great leaders in health care", he wrote.

Police said later Friday evening that they are not now seeking any suspects but are keeping an open mind on all possibilities. A very, very sad day.

Apotex employs more than 10,000 people in research, development, manufacturing and distribution facilities worldwide, with more than 6,000 employees at its Canadian operations, CTV reported.

The couple were well known philanthropists and active on the political scene.

Their neighbors, business associates and some of Canada's most powerful politicians said they were saddened by the deaths.

Sherman was born in Toronto, Canada in 1942 and was the youngest to ever enter into the University of Toronto's Engineering Science program at age 16. They also had close ties to the Jewish community as they donated roughly $50 million to the United Jewish Appeal - a Jewish philanthropic umbrella organization that later changed its name to the Jewish Federations of North America.
