They were helped by trained swimmers and local fishermen who launched rescue efforts when the boat capsized. Police said the ferry riders were not wearing life jackets, The Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Abdirahaman, who is now being held on two counts of probable cause first-degree assault, was pictured in his mugshot bruised and bloodied.

Among the witnesses to the incident were a crowd of people waiting to visit Santa Claus. When officers arrived, they learned the incident started after a theft was interrupted. The victims were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Both individuals were transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis for treatment.

Speaking at a news briefing Sunday night, Bloomington Police officials described how the suspect snuck into the men's room - as they were modeling outfits for friends outside - and tried swiping some of their belongings. Macy's closed early but the rest of the mall stayed open.
