NY truck attack treated as terrorism; 8 dead, multiple injured

AT LEAST six people have been killed in NY on Tuesday afternoon local time by a gunman firing from his truck, police sources said.

He says the man exited the vehicle brandishing a paintball gun and a pellet gun. The NYPD initially said: "We are responding to reports of shots fired in Lower Manhattan".

Gay said he stuck his head around the corner and saw a slender man in a blue track suit running southbound on West Street holding a gun.

Manhattan restaurant chef Eugene Duffy was crossing a street when he heard something, turned back and saw the pickup truck on the bike path.

"A vehicle just ran over 2 people and then crashed into a school bus", one person on scene tweeted. Four people were removed from the bus and they had minor injuries, the official said. Police have arrested one suspect in the incident, which unfolded near the World Trade Center, and say there are "no others outstanding". New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was also headed to the scene.

Police bomb units, ambulances and helicopters descended on the area in response to the attack, a Citigroup (C) official on the ground told FOX Business' Charlie Gasparino.

The incident happened near both Stuyvesant High School and Borough of Manhattan Community College.

The New York Police Department is sending out updates on social media and posted on its Twitter feed that one person was in custody. President Donald Trump's office said in a statement that he and Chief of Staff John Kelly are monitoring the situation.

Video of the scene shows at least two people lying limp in the street.

Sanders says, "Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected".

Mr Trump later tweeted: "In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person".
