Following the incident, Shuman said she considered pressing charges, but soon found herself working with Carter's manager.
Though she tried to move on with her life, she ended up having to work with Nick Carter later on, even performing a song with him at one point - as she was signed with the same label and pressured somewhat by her management.
"Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual", he said.
Carter allegedly took Schuman, who was 18 at the time, into a bathroom and began kissing her.
"He was relentless, refusing to take my no's for an answer", she added.
"He whispered in my ear as to entice me, 'I could be your husband.'" Schuman says she felt "scared and trapped" as he was "stronger and much bigger" than she was. Schuman is also known for her role in the film, Love Don't Cost a Thing, which also starred Nick Cannon and Christina Milan.
Met Police investigating second claim of sexual assault against Kevin Spacey
Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey is understood to be being investigated by British police over a second alleged sexual assault . The incidents reported to the Lambeth theatre cover a period of 1995 to 2013 and have not been verified, The Old Vic said.
In her blog post, Schuman described the aftermath of her alleged assault by Carter, saying he called her for weeks afterward to leave messages demanding she speak with him before eventually giving up.
Although after the two met for the first time again since the incident, Shuman said Carter was insulted by her lack of interest in seeing him again. He shut the door and we continued to kiss. He then picked me up, put me on the bathroom counter and started to unbutton my trousers. "I told him to stop, but he didn't".
Over the next several years, Shuman opened up about being raped, telling her therapist, family, and friends but never went public. Then she said though she told him she did not want to have sex, he pinned her down in a bedroom and raped her vaginally. "I could be your husband", she said he replied.
Schuman shared the allegations in a detailed blog post earlier this month and tweeted a link to her story this week. "It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm", the Backstreet Boy said.
Carter has yet to comment on the allegations.
She says she later told people in her personal life - including her therapist, her family and friends - but chose to speak out publicly when she saw a RadarOnline article last month about Nick being investigated for sexual assault in 2006. Schuman ultimately chose to share her accusations after Radar Online posted an article about another woman who said she was allegedly assaulted by Carter.
