A commando of the Indian Air Force's (IAF) Garud Force and five militants were killed in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district on Saturday, an official said. Police said that Mehmood was involved in the killing of BSF personnel in Hajin last month. After being caught, the harmful militants resorted to open firing which was countered by the security forces leading to the former's death. One of the terrorists killed in the encounter is Owaid, nephew of 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi.
Indian Army and police have claimed recovery of weapons and ammunition from the gunfight site.
According to officials, the slain IAF commando was part of the joint team that took on militants in the village.

His younger brother Umair was among the six LeT terrorist who were killed in the adjoining hamlet today. Owaid is the third man from the Lakhvi family to be killed in Kashmir. Prior to that, two terrorists had got killed in an encounter in Bonikhan Hajin on November 22, 2016.
