Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) ripped President Trump on Sunday after the president said he should have left three UCLA basketball players in jail in China for shoplifting. "I should have left them in jail!"
The UCLA trio of LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill were briefly detained for stealing from a Louis Vuitton store in the city of Hangzhou earlier this month in what became a minor diplomatic incident.
LaVar, apparently insecure at the insinuation that he did not have the power to get his son out of Chinese jail - which again, LiAngelo likely wouldn't have served any time anyways - told ESPN, "Don't tell me nothing".
Trump on Wednesday tweeted, "Do you think the three UCLA Basketball Players will say thank you President Trump?".
The players were arrested and questioned on November 7 about stealing from high-end stores, including sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store next to the team's hotel in Hangzhou, where the Bruins had been staying before leaving for Shanghai to face Georgia Tech. On Tuesday, the players returned home to the USA on Tuesday.
Well, Trump caught wind of Ball's comments Sunday, and needless to say, he wasn't happy.
Donald Trump accused La Var Ball of being'unaccepting of his help
The President received the thanks of the players at a news conference later that day, where they also apologized for their behavior.
Ball on Friday seemed to largely disregard Trump's role in his son's release in an interview with ESPN. "Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out".
Trump, shockingly, was aggrieved that he wasn't getting more appreciation for helping facilitate their release from the country (aka doing his job). Don't tell me nothing.
Although LiAngelo Ball publicly expressed nothing but gratitude for Trump's intercession, his father, LaVar Ball, spurned Trump.
As long as my boy's back here, I'm fine. I'm from L.A. I've seen a lot worse things happen than a guy taking some glasses. The university later announced that the players would be suspended indefinitely. And, in the end, that's surely exactly what Ball wanted.
Adam Silver contacted by National Football League owner about replacing Roger Goodell
The letter was sent to Jones' attorney, David Boies, who Jones hired recently to try and ratchet up the tension on the NFL . Jones is seeking to at least delay completion of the contract, with Goodell's current deal in effect until 2019.
