Adam Silver contacted by National Football League owner about replacing Roger Goodell

That stance was backed up Friday by an explosive article that will appear in the December 4 issue of ESPN The Magazine, in which an angry Jones promised to make Goodell pay after learning of the suspension.

Jones is seeking to at least delay completion of the contract, with Goodell's current deal in effect until 2019.

It was dated Wednesday, November 15.Your November letter is yet another effort by your client to disregard and deliberately interfere with the May 2017 Resolution, unanimously adopted by the owners (including your client), which expressly approved a contract extension with Commissioner Goodell and further authorized the Compensation Committee to finalize the terms of that extension.

The letter was sent to Jones' attorney, David Boies, who Jones hired recently to try and ratchet up the tension on the NFL.

A picture is painted of a two-track National Football League, one in which Jones initially needed Goodell but one now in which their motivations and desires are increasingly at odds.

In May, Jones voted in favor of extending Goodell's contract. "The one great time, because we give our commissioner such power, the one great time the owners have their biggest input is when you are either first-time hiring him or extending him". The owner said "there's a chance" Goodell's extension could be completed before or at that meeting. While the league's letter reportedly doesn't make that suggestion outright, some owners have been discussing the potential there, according to the Journal.

On his Tuesday radio show, Jones said "well over half" of the owners agreed with his stance of conducting a final vote after the compensation committee finishes the negotiating with Goodell.

Some owners are urging league leaders to consider possible disciplinary action against Jones for conduct detrimental to the NFL, people familiar with the situation said earlier this week.

"I won't cast judgment, on one moment when a joke went south, to capture who this man represents in a lifetime commitment of love and compassion to all ethnicities", Sanders told the Star-Telegram.
