Zachary Levi scores lead role in DC's upcoming Shazam! film

Zachary Levi will play the title character in New Line and DC Entertainment's "Shazam!", sources confirmed to Variety.

Levi (Chuck, Heroes Reborn) was famously seen in Thor: The Dark World as Fandral, and returns as one of the Warriors Three in next month's Thor: Ragnarok.

According to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Zachary Levi is playing the main character of Billy Batson.

The movie will be a big career leap for Zachary Levi who is yet to make his mark as a solo hero.

The character first appeared in Whiz Comics back in 1940 and was the most popular superhero of that decade, outselling even Superman. It was only in 1970s that the DC banner took over the character.

These ancient gods include Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury, from which the adult version of Batson (Levi) derives his superpowers to be the world's mightiest mortal.

'Shazam!' will start filming under Warner the beginning of next year, and now with the lead officially revealed, it shouldn't be long until more casting information trickles out. DC Comics acquired the rights to Captain Marvel in 1972.

Shazam! is scheduled for release on April 5th, 2019.

Sandberg is directing the film with script by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke.

The film is being developed concurrently with a film focusing on Shazam villain Black Adam to star Dwayne Johnson.

Shazam! now has a 3.55 out of 5 User Anticipation Rating, making it the twentieth most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among users.
