Police followed the route and found the teacher in the Allegan Game Area, around 50 miles from the family home, deceased and buried. Police say it appeared to be suicide by strangulation.

Lockhart refused to allow police access to the home he shared with Theresa following her disappearance, forcing police to obtain a search warrant.

At a news conference Wednesday evening, Portage Police said they had recently confirmed that a body found Tuesday in a wooded area in Allegan County is in fact the body of Theresa Lockhart.

Theresa and Christopher met online in 2006 and were married in 2007.

At that time, Blue said his department had worked with Michigan State Police and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office, and had used a cadaver dog, to try to find Theresa.

Lockhart said he got into an argument with his wife Theresa Lockhart on May 18 when he "just snapped".

Christopher Lockhart's body was discovered in the basement of his home by officers who were conducting a welfare check after he had missed a parole appointment and his electronic tether showed no movement for some time. Authorities had previously named Christopher as a person of interest in the case after he failed to report his wife missing before her colleagues.

Armold noted that Lockhart never asked for updates on the investigation and didn't participate in searches for his wife. She had been missing for 154 days, said Armold.
