Rafa Benitez misses Newcastle trip to Swansea

Swansea host Newcastle in the return to Premier League football after the global break.

Jamaal Lascelles scored the only goal of the game with a thumping header in the 76th minute.

A clubs statement, released on social media said: "We can confirm that Rafa Benítez will not be at the Liberty Stadium today as he recovers from an operation".

Newcastle had arranged to put on a helicopter to fly Benitez to and from his Merseyside base.

Lascelles towered above Alfie Mawson in the six-yard box to secure back-to-back Premier League wins for Newcastle.

Ritchie might not have been on the field after he caught Alfie Mawson with a similarly risky high boot to that which earned Liverpool's Sadio Mane a contentious red card at Manchester City 24 hours earlier, but the Scotland winger escaped with a booking.

"Swansea gave a debut to new loan signing from Bayern Munich Renato Sanches but the Portuguese midfielder faded after a bright opening and was eventually replaced by Wilfried Bony who returned to Swansea from Manchester City in the transfer window".

Lascelles' goal earned Newcastle a second consecutive win

'Would you take a point now ahead of the Swansea match?'

Newcastle went close after 33 minutes when Ritchie's cross was met by the head of Joselu, and Lukasz Fabianski sprang to his left to pull off a fantastic one-handed save.

When it comes to likely on the road victories, Swansea away must be one of the more possible/probable but would Newcastle fans vote to take a draw?

Naughton's effort was blocked and then Carroll's volley from a shrewd Ayew pass was stopped by Elliot at his near post. One-on-one with Rob Elliot, the striker rounded the Newcastle goalkeeper but looked on in despair as Lascelles, covering brilliantly, made a sliding intervention to clear the ball behind.

Paul Clement introduced returning striker Wilfried Bony in his place but the fan favourite could do little about Lascelles' thumping victor, the captain getting above Alfie Mawson to leave Fabianski with no chance.

They nearly did when Ayoze Perez forced Fabianski into saving with his outstretched left leg.
