But despite the apparent success of the operation, her sister, Shaimaa Selim, accused staff of lying about how much weight Ms Ahmed had lost, prompting several doctors to resign. Eman was treated by obesity expert, Dr Muffazal Lakdwala at Mumbai's Saifee hospital and lost nearly 300 kg during her stay in India.

In Burjeel, Eman suffered from kidney dysfunction and heart disease that worsened her condition in the last few days.

She has left a family behind including her sister who was there for her throughout her weight loss journey.

She died just a week after celebrating her 37th birthday.

Eman was being monitored in hospital with a view to starting physiotherapy to enable her regain use of her limbs when she passed away.

She was under the supervision of the team of 20 doctors from different specialities who put her on a special liquid diet to reduce her weight enough for bariatric surgery. She had been bedridden for 25 years because of her weight, which doctors blamed on a thyroid condition.

At some point during the confrontation, authorities say the gunman then shot himself, but it's unclear if it was intentional. Another victim who is now hospitalized was pistol whipped, police said .

Before travelling to India for surgery in March, she weighed some 500 kilograms. "We will definitely help her", Swaraj had tweeted in response to the request.

And then there was the herculean task of moving Abd El Aty from her home in the Egyptian port city of Alexandria - which she hadn't left in almost 25 years - to the hospital in Mumbai, where Lakdawala would perform the bariatric procedure.

Family members and relatives of Eman Ahmad are yet to come to terms with the loss of their beloved.

Last month, a video of Eman was viral on social media in which she was seen dancing in her bed. She also shared pictures of Eman suffering frequent seizures and tremors and crying in pain to prove her point.

Eman weighed a whopping 498 kg on her arrival in Mumbai's Saifee hospital for treatment in February this year.

The hospital said: "Our prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to her family".
