A beleaguered Suresh Prabhu, who had taken the "moral responsibility" for a recent spate of train accidents, came in for high praise from his successor Piyush Goyal, who took charge as the new Railway minister today. The move, that came amidst a spate of accidents putting the role of Prabhu in question, did not surprise anyone.
Appreciating the the efforts put in by his predecessor Suresh Prabhu, Goyal said: "Now people talk about ministers working 24×7".
Prabhu had not attended office after August 23, when he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and offered to resign after the accidents last month.
Goyal, who was earlier the minister of state for power, will have his task cut out as the railways battles a creaking infrastructure and revenue shortage on back of low fares and stiff competition from budget airlines.
