Gunman shoots NY police officer before taking his own life

Nguyen was also wounded in the right arm during the 4:35 p.m. shooting at 149 Ridgewood Ave. near Essex Street where the cop and his partner were responding to a 911 call of an emotionally disturbed person.

"What could have been just another day, just another call, turned into something much worse", said Mayor Bill de Blasio. The officer did not return fire, O'Neill says.

Nguyen has been with the department for two years. Officers were told the suspect was armed with some type of rifle, what the NYPD refers to as a "long gun".

The officer, a woman, was shot in the arm, the spokeswoman said.

As Nguyen approached the bedroom door through an unlit hallway, Sookdeo popped out and started shouting, according to sources. She was taken to Jamaica Hospital Center in unknown condition. "He was actually, you know, trying to make light of the situation in his own hospital bed; having a lot of spirit; a lot of energy".

Dozens of residents watched the scene unfold from cars, sidewalks and their homes. "Even when I stuck my head out the window, an officer was like, 'Stick your head back inside!'" When police later stormed he apartment, he was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police negotiators tried to talk with the suspect, who hasn't been identified, and get him into police custody.

The officer was treated by the medics with him, police said.
