The four-alarm fire started before dawn and destroyed a 196-unit apartment building under construction.

According to the site, East Bay Redeveloped, the project was supposed to rise on what was a large surface parking lot and a small commercial building. The crane is now spinning from the heat. The fire was burning near the Whole Foods and an Acura dealership at 24th and Valdez Street.

Christien Kafton, a reporter for KTVU Channel 2 News, also tweeted video of the raging fire. Police blocked roads due to the inferno that sparked around 4:30 a.m. Federal investigators have joined the search for a cause.

The fire began early Friday at a building under construction, forcing nearby evacuations and sending flames high into the air.

It could be Sunday before 700-900 residents living near the fire scene on Valdez St.

The fire near Lake Merritt has been contained and no one was injured.

Embers are falling onto the streets and buildings in the area.

Instead, flames have reduced the Alta Waverly to a charred skeleton that is unstable and missing chunks of scaffolding.

As crews continue to tend to these issues, they are keeping a close eye on a crane that was swinging around in circles in the height of the fire. An estimated 100 nearby residents were evacuated in early hours and a Red Cross shelter was set up at Christ the Light Cathedral.

Streets in the area are closed.
