Trumps Spend $5 Million Less Than Obamas On White House Salaries

The White House has been required to report the salaries and staff titles to Congress every year since 1995.

The US Labor Department reports that women in the US on average earned about 82 cents for every dollar a man made in 2016.

The imbalance is not necessarily because women are being paid less for doing the same jobs as men.

That gap between women and men in the White House Office lines up closely with the Pew Research Center's most recent statistics on gender pay disparity in the American workforce, where women earn 83 percent of men's median hourly earnings.

This year's reveals that 22 people earn the US$179,700 (NZ$246,119) maximum salary, including chief strategist Steven Bannon and senior counsellor Kellyanne Conway. In 2014, Obama signed an executive order promoting fair pay and safe work conditions, including mandates for paycheck transparency and a ban on forced arbitration in cases of sexual harassment, gender-based discrimination or sexual assault.

Two of Trump's key advisors, Gary Cohn and Christopher Liddell, are paid reduced salaries of $30,000, the lowest salaries among all White House staff. Likewise, Kushner is also receiving a salary of $0.00 for his position as "assistant to the president and senior advisor".

One day later, Ivanka Trump tweeted her support for closing the gender pay gap. Mr Obama had 472 staffers during the final year of his presidency, down from 487 in his first year.

On Thursday, White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders falsely insisted that Trump "in no way, form or fashion has ever promoted or encouraged violence".
