Jon Watts' film gathered $117 million in domestic sales, for a grand total of $257 million when oversea box office numbers are added in.

The latest "Spider-Man" movie has proven it can hang with the big boys. "Spider-Man: Homecoming" is already planned to have a sequel and a release date has been set for 2019.

If Homecoming has decent legs at the box office - and it should, judging by its overwhelmingly positive critical reception (93 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience reaction (an A on CinemaScore) - it will eventually surpass Spider-Man 3's tally and challenge the original Spider-Man's $403 million mark, tops for all Spider-Man films.

But "Homecoming" returned to "Spider-Man" teenage roots, casting Tom Holland in the part.

The well-received "Homecoming" kicks off the third "Spider-Man" iteration in the last 15 years, and second reboot since 2014's "The Amazing Spider-Man", with Andrew Garfield.

Homecoming takes place after the events of Civil War, and 15-year-old Peter Parker feels neglected by Iron Man, struggling to adjust back to the mundaneness of high school while disguising his superpowers.

As you can tell, the look was quite different. Spider-Man 2, which features a broken Peter riddled with self-doubt, taking on the equally fractured Dr Octopus (Alfred Molina), is still regarded as one of the best superhero movies of all time, though Spider-Man 3 did tarnish the reputation of the series somewhat by trying to do too much. Homecoming is basically Spider-Man's Man Of Steel-except that he destroys fences and cars (and admittedly a ferry), not an entire city-as he comes into his powers.
