Sinkhole in Pasco County swallowing houses; began as pool-sized hole

Tobin says surrounding homes are being evacuated and that emergency management officials are at the scene.

First call came in at 7:21 a.m.

Officials said the sinkhole started as a depression that formed underneath the boat. Smaller holes are common, though they have been known to damage and even destroy entire homes.

According to the listing on Zillow, the property was a "repaired sinkhole" home. Residents were inside the home, but managed to get out safely.

Dramatic video showed the home in Land O' Lakes, north of Tampa in Pasco County, collapsing into the hole Friday morning.

"We will have three if not four septic tanks that will start merging with the lake", he said.

"This is something we've never seen before", he said.

Authorities have identified 11 homes that are in danger.

Eleven homes were evacuated, including the two destroyed. They will not be allowed to enter their homes until they've been determined to be safe.

Authorities are going door to door to determine if there are any other homes in jeopardy.

"This is an active sinkhole". The American Red Cross is assisting residents who've been displaced.

"This is going to be a couple of weeks, maybe a month-long operation", Guthrie said.
