While Bethanie Mattek-Sands no longer in the running for the Wimbledon Women's Singles is bad enough, she also ends any chances of going for a Grand Slam Doubles win with her partner Lucie Safarova.

Still clearly in pain, the 32-year-old continued to scream out: "It hurts, it hurts so much", as she was taken away on a stretcher. Speaking of the gravity of the injury Cirstea said, "I think the kneecap, it was out".

Mattek-Sands, the victor of 24 doubles titles including seven at the majors as well as a mixed doubles gold at the Rio Olympics past year, said she has yet to see the video of the incident.

Third-seeded Karolina Pliskova saw her bid to win her first major title at Wimbledon dashed while American wild-card Bethanie Mattek-Sands sustained a gruesome knee injury during second-round action.

'I have been getting a lot of messages and really appreciate the support, ' she said, holding back tears.

But she questioned why it took the medical services so long to react to her friend's distress.

Officer Russ Jackson said at a briefing Thursday: "We do believe that there are other people potentially involved in this". A man has been arrested at a Liverpool airport in connection with the Manchester Arena terror attack.

'Please help me, please, please. You wouldn't wish that on your worst enemy, ' said Cirstea. "I guess the climate doesn't help, the fact that it's too nice, too hot, too sunny, makes everything very dry". My physio jumped and he was there. I felt useless. All she kept saying was "Sorana, help me, help me". She's popular on tour, known for her gregarious personality, loud laugh and original fashion choices, including the stars-and-stripes knee-high socks she wore while teaming with Jack Sock to win a mixed-doubles gold medal for the last year's Rio Olympics. I was there on the ground, and it felt forever. "I don't want to see it again". "Then I woke up in hospital and my leg was straight".

"It took a while". So of course you wonder what would happen if it was a heart issue or something like this.

"I remember my knee just feeling really tight and I took a look at it and something was wrong".

She added: "All I remember is hearing this pop in my leg".

Despite the player being in excruciating pain, medical help arrived rather slowly as a stretcher only came an estimated 10 to 15 minutes after the incident.
