"Members of the Evaluation Commission have used the terms "forward-looking", "innovative", "vibrant" and "cool" to describe the Los Angeles candidature, and "historical", "cultural", "iconic" and "amazing backdrops" for that of Paris", said Patrick Baumann, IOC member and chair of the 2024 Evaluation Commission.

"In a nutshell, the candidature process which worked so well in the past has become too expensive and too onerous for this new political reality", International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. It's unclear which city Paris or Los Angeles will host 2024 or the 2028 Summer Olympics.

IOC Vice President John Coates told NBC, which agreed to pay $7.75 billion for the exclusive broadcast rights from 2022 through 2032: "One of them would put their hand up for 2028 and that same city would vacate 2024".

At separate news conferences, the mayors said they could work toward a deal.

Any other cities applying for 2028 can instead concentrate on 2032.

Minutes after Macron spoke, U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter: "Working hard to get the Olympics for the United States (L.A.)".
