Israeli warplanes hit a Syrian regime post on Friday hours after a mortar shell hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Israel's army said.

The projectile landed in an open area, causing no injuries or damage.

The General Command of the Syrian Arab Armed Forces said the attack followed the government's thwarting of a wide-scale offensive on the area surrounding al-Baath city in the Quneitra countryside by the forces of "Nusra Front", an al-Qaida affiliate that has since rebranded itself as the "Levant Liberation Committee".

"While I was speaking, I said here that we will not tolerate errant shooting and we will respond to all firing". Whoever attacks us - we will attack him.

"In response to the projectile launched towards Israel from Syria, IAF aircraft targeted the Syrian military position that fired the mortar", the IDF said on Twitter. "This is our policy and we will continue with it".
