According to the newsletter, Atari's objective is to create a new product that stays true to its heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari. Atari has also said the new console will launch in two versions, with one option boasting a front panel with a wood or glass finish, and a black/red edition. The company has now revealed the new Ataribox console and it sounds like it will offer more than just a retro gaming fix. There's now no word on just what games will be available, when the unit might release, its costs or really anything else.
Atari said it has lots of details to figure out in the months ahead, and it promised regular status updates. Atari stated that they are remaining intentionally vague regarding certain Ataribox details as they want to make sure they have time to get everything right and wish to have time to make adjustments based on consumer feedback. Until then, enjoy the images of the unit. There are two different versions of the console, which both feature ribbed black plastic as a throwback to older Atari consoles.
Atari Shares Images of Upcoming Ataribox
Since the picture of the console suggests that there is no cartridge port, this is leading many to believe that it will run classic games via emulation, like Nintendo has with the NES and will do with the SNES Classic. We'll have more on whatever it is once they decide to stop.
On the back of the Ataribox you'll find four USB ports, a HDMI port, an SD card slot, power out, and what looks like an Ethernet port. The info shared by Geeksultd gives a glimpse of this new console tweaked into a thin frame of futuristic design capable of running all retro and modern game.
