Wild Prepare for Entry Draft, Expansion Draft

If Fleury lands in Vegas, he would be the instant face of the team and the first starting goaltender in Golden Knights history.

When Commissioner Gary Bettman officially announced the NHL's first expansion team since 2000 would be based in Las Vegas, Nevada nearly a year ago, the idea of hockey mixed with the glitz and glamour of the desert may have been hard to believe.

The only question now seems to be who McPhee is going to pick when the draft comes Wednesday, and how the Rangers are going to deal with it. "McPhee and his staff are willing to negotiate deals so the other clubs do not lose a player they would otherwise like to keep".

This applies mostly if someone like Kevin Shattenkirk somehow lands on an unprotected list due to his impending free agency, but it makes for a potentially big decision for the Golden Knights entering Year One of the franchise.

The following unprotected players are among the possible candidates for expansion draft selection by the Vegas Knights: Cody Eakin, Curtis McKenzie, Dan Hamhuis, Patrik Nemeth or Jamie Oleksiak.

For the Washington Capitals, there was no suspense on Sunday morning, as The Post reported their protection list on Saturday afternoon.

That left the required two forwards (Joakim Nordstrom and Lee Stempniak) and one defenseman (Klas Dahlbeck) with the required experience mandated by the league, along with goaltenders Cam Ward and Eddie Lack.

Asked how he might resolve the goaltending situation, Francis said, "You can always resolve it if you give up a high draft pick".

The next juggernaut in the National Hockey League is the Edmonton Oilers as they have the right mix of young and veteran talent that acquired the necessary playoff experience this spring to make a memorable Stanley Cup run in the near future. The team will be announced Wednesday night during the NHL Awards Show in Las Vegas.

The Vegas Golden Knights have a great opportunity to make life hard for their Pacific Division rivals. How?

The Golden Knights must select at least three goalies in the draft but could select more. If he somehow not taken by them, Fleury will probably be traded later in the offseason anyways. if Fleury doesn't get taken, look for maybe Scott Wilson, Olli Maatta, or Ian Cole to be taken by Las Vegas. The problems are on the back end where the club has to find a way to get around the stringent rules because they'll most likely go the 7-3-1 route when they enter their protected list.

"This expansion draft, it's complicated things a little bit, I think everyone is gradually working through and ultimately we all know we're going to lose one player and you accept that", Yzerman said.

"It certainly took a lot of pressure off of the organization to not pursue a trade and that's really what we wanted to do", GM Jim Rutherford said.

This trade affords Anaheim to keep Cam Fowler, Kevin Bieksa, Josh Manson and Hampus Lindholm as a unit, but now, the Golden Knights have an opportunity to select a top-nine forward off the Ducks roster.

The Panthers left Jonathan Marchessault out there after he broke through last season by leading Florida with 30 goals.
