Nintendo has plans to support the 3DS "well beyond 2018"

That's.about a year and some change left on the system, based on that statement alone - but speaking to IGN at E3, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime stated that they plan on helping it out beyond that. The same goes for when Metroid Prime 4 when it arrives in either 2018 or 2019. About five years after, it was followed by "Metroid II: Return of Samus" which was playable on the GameBoy in 1991 and as a Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console game in 2011.

With the very poor performance of the Wii U and subsequent new direction Nintendo chose to take with the Switch, you can understand why the company was cautious in the run up to the Switch's launch.

The concern is that Nintendo's first-party offerings, much as it was with Wii U, won't be able to carry Nintendo Switch.

What we are doing, as quickly as we can, is scaling up the production to make more available into the marketplace, to get to the point where every consumer who wants a Nintendo Switch can find a Nintendo Switch.

While that does little to answer the many questions that remain regarding why the Switch didn't simply launch with Virtual Console, Fils-Aime's reassurances are more comforting when you realize that Nintendo has previously stated that they do not intend for the Switch Online game service to replace Virtual Console.

One of the biggest reasons that the Wii U failed was due to the massive droughts the console experienced when it came to games.

Nine days ago, Pokemon fans were disappointed that "Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon" won't be making it to the Nintendo Switch.

"It's everything from not only how is it going to work but it's also how we do this in a way that doesn't lend itself to piracy or systems or our core software infrastructure that can be modded or hacked", Fils-Aime told Mashable. "And so that's how we think these through".

"In the end, what we want is we want the consumer to call it their device, right?" What we are internally resisting is just a pure port, versus thinking about how not only do we showcase a game to a wider audience, but how do we make sure that there's something more?
