"It is important for everyone that the inquiry should establish as quickly as possible the cause of the fire and how it was able to spread so quickly to the whole of the building", he said.

Sir Martin Moore-Bick, who has retired from the Court of Appeal, will lead the inquiry with his appointment expected to be announced officially on Thursday.

It is thought some 80 people perished in the fire, although only 18 have been formally identified by the coroner. Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack admitted that even with this new number, the true total of those killed in the devastating fire may not be known until the end of the year.

They tell us they are also carrying out a review, but so far have found nothing risky in their accommodation.

An Edinburgh Napier University spokesperson said: "Following the Grenfell Tower fire in London we immediately began a review of all our buildings".

Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday Britain must hold a national investigation into exterior cladding used on high-rise buildings after all those checked after the deadly London tower block blaze this month failed safety tests.

"At this stage, we must presume that no-one in those 23 flats survived, that includes anyone who lived there or was visiting them", she added.

"As we have seen from the number of buildings where the cladding has failed the combustibility test. this is a much wider issue", May said.

And after the 100 per cent failure record continues, she urged councils and housing associations to "get on" with fire safety checks without waiting for test results. "We are drawing on expert advice from a range of global specialists such as anthropologists and odontologists - the work to identify people will be ongoing for many months to come".

"We'll also monitor the outcome of the subsequent investigation into the fire and act on the recommendations which follow".

Police believe at least 80 people died in Grenfell Tower including the latest to be named - a six-month-old baby who was found dead in her mother's arms.

The representative body of the nation's higher education institutions said its members were conducting the inspections to make sure any cladding used meets the "highest standards of fire safety".

"What the tragedy of Grenfell Tower has exposed is the disastrous effects of austerity", he said.
