Edmonton captain Connor McDavid has won his first Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player.

Wayne Gretzky will present the Hart Trophy as MVP to Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby or Sergei Bobrovsky to cap the NHL's awards show. Not only was McDavid the only player in the league to reach 90 points this past season, he took it a step further and reached the 100-point mark in 82 games, along with an impressive 30 goals.

He was responsible for the Oilers' revival, helping the club achieve its highest point total in 30 years and leading them back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after 11 seasons.

If McDavid wins, it would be a memorable moment as nine-time victor Gretzky presents the 20-year-old Oilers star with the trophy. Toronto center Auston Matthews easily took the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie, and Columbus goalie Bobrovsky won his second Vezina Trophy.

"It's unbelievable to receive this from Wayne, the greatest player of all-time", McDavid said when presented the award by "The Great One" at a post-season presentation ceremony at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. His 40 goals and 69 points were records for a first-year Leaf and he's rightly expected to win the first Calder trophy for Toronto in 51 years.

The NHL had a giant party on Wednesday night, complete with the NHL Award announcements and NHL Expansion Draft for the Vegas Golden Knights and their inaugural season.

McDavid, tellingly, hadn't gotten a glimpse of Matthews until he saw him play at the world junior championships in 2016 - months before the Leafs made him their first No. 1 overall pick since 1985.

Canada has good luck getting on the cover of National Hockey League games; too bad it doesn't have the same luck winning the Stanley Cup.

In his first full season in Columbus, Tortorella led the Blue Jackets' revival for their best record ever and their first playoff appearance since 2014, even leading the overall National Hockey League standings earlier in the season.
