The White House didn't let USA reporters witness the meeting, intended as a prelude to Trump's first face-to-face talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expected within months.
Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted a photo of Trump and Lavrov Wednesday morning. When the press pool was allowed into the Oval Office at the meeting's conclusion, both Lavrov and Kislyak were gone and, in a surprise, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was with Trump instead.
In Moscow, Putin met with his security council to discuss US-Russian relations in the context of Lavrov's meeting with Trump, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
All signs are that the talks focused virtually exclusively on Syia, as Lavrov said that the USA sanctions against Russian Federation had not been addressed during the meeting. An official White House readout of the meeting omitted Kislyak's presence at the meeting.
Meetings with Kislyak in December were what led to the dismissal of Trump's first national security adviser Michael Flynn, and to Attorney General Jeff Sessions' recusal from the Russian Federation investigations. The conversations were intercepted by U.S. intelligence agencies.
"We want to see the killing, the awful killing, stopped in Syria as soon as possible and everyone is working toward that end", Trump told reporters.
Earlier in the day, Lavrov met with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson at the State Department.
An unidentified person asks again: "Does the Comey firing cast a shadow on your talks, gentlemen?"
Govt's anti-Naxal ops should instill 'fear' in them, says Rajnath Singh
In addition, the home minister said, unique identification numbers should also be used in gelatin and other explosive materials. The chief ministers of Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand were in attendance.
FOREIGN MINISTER LAVROV: Was he fired?
Lavrov says American politicians who are raising questions about Russian interference in the 2016 election are damaging the USA political system by suggesting it's being controlled by outsiders.
During a meeting with Mr. Tillerson at the State Department, reporters shouted questions at both men about the firing of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director. "Neither of us brought up this bacchanalia", Lavrov said. "We had an official photographer in the room, as did they", spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday.
Mr Lavrov added that the Trump administration were "people of action" and that they wanted to resolve important issues.
President Donald Trump late last night welcomed Mr Vladimir Putin's top diplomat to the White House for Mr Trump's highest-level face-to-face contact with a Russian government official since he took office in January.
During the meeting, Trump also raised the issues concerning Ukraine and expressed his administration's commitment to remain engaged in resolving the conflict.
A Russian plan to stabilize Syria after over six years of civil war is the most urgent foreign policy topic on the agenda.
He also dismissed claims of Russian meddling in USA domestic politics as "fabrications". With Trump's dismissal of Comey supercharging the Russiagate scandal, they may get even worse.
