Pakistani bombing kills 25, deputy Senate leader wounded

A powerful bomb struck on Friday in the town of Mastung, targeting the convoy of the deputy leader of the Senate, Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, who was lightly wounded in the attack.

The blast occurred in the Mastong district, about 30 miles southeast of the provincial capital, Quetta, in southwestern Pakistan. Television images showed people rushing injured to hospital and a few badly damaged vehicles.

Police cordoned off the area and were investigating the cause of the blast.

Islamic State claimed it had carried out a deadly bomb attack next to a convoy of the deputy chairman of the Pakistan Senate today.

Malala Yousufzai also condemned the attack and said that terrorists want to weaken Pakistan through their heinous acts but Pakistanis will stand united against terrorism and extremism. It was later claimed by the Islamic State group, which has been making inroads in the country through alliances with local militant outfits.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack directed the relevant authorities to ensure the best medical treatment for the injured.

Mr Haideri represents the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) party, a Sunni Islamist party that is part of the ruling coalition.
