This was the second of four Confederate monuments slated for removal in a contentious process that has sparked protests on both sides.
The City remains secretive about plans to address remaining monuments.
"This is about showing the whole world that we as a city and as a people are able to acknowledge, understand, reconcile - and most importantly - choose a better future", Landrieu said in a statement.
The staff at the Morris Jeff Community School, located near the Jefferson Davis monument, sent out a recorded message late Wednesday to parents, saying that the New Orleans Police Department had confirmed that the statue would be removed overnight.
On Sunday, supporters of the monuments, some waving Confederate flags, clashed with demonstrators near the site of a statue honoring Confederate General Robert E. Lee that is also slated for removal. When the Confederate flag was not lowered to half-mast on the SC statehouse house grounds following the shooting - as had been done with the USA flag and the state flag in mourning for the victims - those pictures sparked a contentious debate that led then-Governor Nikki Haley to make a strong appeal to legislators that resulted in the flag being removed from the statehouse grounds altogether.
The council voted to remove the four monuments in 2015 at the urging of Mayor Mitch Landrieu - part of a national response after nine black parishioners were shot to death by an avowed racist at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, earlier that year. City officials are keeping their timetable secret, citing security concerns. I believe more strongly today than ever that in New Orleans, we should truly remember all of our history, not some of it. One person held a sign that read, "Bout Time".
"The longer it takes to go ahead and rip off the Band-Aid, the longer this wound will fester", he told Reese.

The New Orleans monument that was taken down has been the subject of frequent vandalism in past years. Davis was president of the Confederate States of America, a group of states that seceded from the USA and led to the Civil War.
"Behind the barricade, everybody behind the barricade", says one New Orleans police officer.
In 2004, the words "slave owner" were painted on the base of the monument.
The 6-foot-tall bronze statue stands atop a roughly 12-foot tall column in a street also named after Davis. Beauregard was a prominent general during the Civil War and the last survivor of the top Confederate leaders.
