While Samsung experienced one of its worst quarters in China, seeing its market share slashed by more than half from 8.6 percent to 3.3 percent with sales down to 3.5 million from 8.7 million at the same time past year, Chinese phone makers Huawei, Oppo and Vivo grew rapidly over the same period, with Huawei leading the market and boasting a market share of 19.7 percent.

Apple might have lost some significant market share in India but in global terms, the company continues to rule the smartphone market.

Smartphone penetration in India grew by 16 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017.

The latest press release available on the firm website revealed Apple as of today accounts for two of the world's top five smartphone models, while the third place is firmly held by one of Oppo's Smartphone. It was also the world's third most popular smartphone model after Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, which together shipped almost 40 million units during the three-month period.

Apple has chose to further expand its reach in Indian smartphone market and hence moved to reduce the price of its iPhone 5s at an unimaginative price.

Chinese phone maker OPPO was third with its R9s model selling an estimated 8.9 million units, for 2.5% of the global market.

"Oppo is largely unknown in the Western world, but its brand is wildly popular in China and growing rapidly across India", said Strategy Analytics executive director Neil Mawston. The R9s is OPPO's flagship 4G device with features such as dual-SIM connectivity and fingerprint security respectively. There is some hope for the Android ecosystem, with the OnePlus 3T making its way into fourth place in Karnataka, the Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 taking fifth place in Maharashtra, the Samsung S4 Mini slotting into fourth place in Tamil Nadu and there is also enough traction for the Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 in Uttar Pradesh for the phone to get the fifth spot. Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) sales doubled up from Q1 2016 while all the other smartphones in the list were launched post-Q1 2016.

For the first quarter of 2017, Apple's iPhone 7 has grabbed the title of the world's best-selling smartphone.
