Parson pointed out that President Trump signed an executive order last Tuesday calling for a special task force to identify obstacles for agriculture growth, including trade and immigration.
State Sen. Scott Bennett, D-Champaign, serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee and said his farming constituents supported Trump, but there were some concerns "when you heard about some of the NAFTA changes, where they've been very good for the agriculture community in IL, when you heard that one of the biggest importers of USA grain, Mexico, would not be dealing with us but dealing with Brazil".
The Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Prosperity will consist of representatives of agencies across the federal government and is required to issue its recommendations within 180 days of the signing of the Executive Order.
"It is in the national interest to promote American agriculture while protecting and supporting the rural communities where food, forestry, fiber, and renewable fuels are grown", the text of the Executive Order reads.
Perdue said that on balance NAFTA has been positive for US agriculture, particularly grain producers, but that the Trump administration thinks it can be improved.
Sonny Perdue was sworn in as Trump's agriculture secretary earlier in the day.
He will then move onto C.S. Monroe Technology Center and connect with six Future Farmers of America chapters via YouTube Live.
BC Dairy Association sets Trump straight on cross-border trade
President Trump told reporters Monday night that a 20 percent tariff is being imposed on softwood lumber entering the U.S. The move left farms producing more than 1.3 million pounds of milk a day needing new buyers.
Not many dairy farmers have been immediately impacted by the ultra-filtered milk trade battle with Canada, but Perdue is happy to see the president go to bat for them. Among the policy initiatives the President and the Secretary addressed were: ag labor, regulations, trade and infrastructure.
Republican Senate Steve Daines calls Perdue an "excellent" pick for the position, and says he looks forward to hosting him in Montana soon.
Speaking April 28 to a crowd of almost 500 at Hale Arena at the American Royal, Perdue talked for about 25 minutes and then answered questions for 15 minutes from a group of farmers and agriculture leaders from Missouri and Kansas.
"I love Gov. Brownback", Perdue said when asked about the possibility that Brownback could still land a role in the administration.
With Perdues confirmation, the last two Trump cabinet-level nominees awaiting Senate confirmation are Alexander Acosta for labor secretary and Robert Lighthizer for US trade representative. "Perdue demonstrated a real understanding of the challenges facing the agriculture industry and a willingness to work together to find solutions", Roberts said.
"Secretary Perdue and I share a common background having been raised on a family farm, running our own small businesses, and serving our country in the military", Parson said.
