Davis Webb becomes Giants' developmental quarterback with 87th pick

The New York Giants have been reluctant to address the backup quarterback position for a few years, routinely passing on drafting Eli Manning's successor.

In any case, expect Webb to go on either Day 1 or 2, and he will definitely be drafted. "He's one of the five quarterbacks where you can make a case in this draft that they can start a game in the National Football League and be a quarterback".

"We think [Webb] has a high ceiling and can come in and learn the pro game", Reese said, per the New York Post.

Webb drew comparisons to last year's No. 1 overall pick: Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff.

The Giants considered themselves lucky that Webb was still available in the third.

"He's a gym rat, a coach's son...let's get him a playbook and a helmet", said head coach Ben McAdoo, who has admitted to never meeting Webb.

"Let me get this straight guys", Reese said. Some expected general manager Jerry Reese to follow that path, but watching it transpire was jarring for Eli Manning's loyal supporters.

"We're hoping Eli plays a long time for us", Reese said.

Since Manning was acquired in the epic draft day swap for Rivers 13 years ago, the Giants have drafted just three quarterbacks (Andre Woodson, sixth round in 2008; Rhett Bomar, fifth round in 2009; Ryan Nassib, fourth round of 2013).

"I am just excited to be a part of a great organization", Webb said.

According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, the decision to draft Webb was made with the hope that he can learn the nuances of the game from Manning and eventually take over as the starter.

If the Giants get their wish, Davis Webb won't even play for at least three years. A two-time Super Bowl victor and MVP, Manning isn't getting any younger as he turned 36 years old back in January. He began his collegiate career at Texas Tech, where he took the starting job from Baker Mayfield, who was a Heisman finalist this year at Oklahoma. "Hopefully he can sit on the sideline with a clipboard and learn the game". The 55th pick was a little high for me. Having a receiver to throw to in Odell Beckham Jr. makes for a nice landing spot for a young quarterback.

Webb was the fifth quarterback taken in the draft, following number two overall pick Mitchel Trubisky (North Carolina to Chicago), number 10 pick Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech to Kansas City), number 12 pick Deshaun Watson (Clemson to Houston), and number 52 pick DeShone Kizer (Notre Dame to Cleveland).
